DISASSEMBLE THE MUTANT ROBOT CONSTRUCTION
A Response to EarthFirst! -Davao
“Revolt is understandably unpopular. As soon as it is defined, it has provoked the measures for its confinement,” says the Italian Situationist named Alexander Trocchi in his proposal for an Insurrection of Million Minds. The idea of subordinating revolt over insurrection in Trocchi’s proposal somehow pertains to Henri Lefebvre’s theory of moments, which it is believed that the individual will have the capacity to create, "the free act defined as the capacity . . . to change a 'moment' in metamorphosis, and perhaps to create one," The Lefebvrean moment now contemporarily relate to the term-- Discourse in Foucault’s definition of power.
In “How Then Do We Go Wild?” article written by our friends from EarthFirst! (Davao group) in response to KSAI’s open letter for the heretics, the critique failed to understand KSAI’s call for creating moments from fermenting an insurrection. By breathing a sweeping statement taken from a Post-Left analysis in lambasting enforced collective thinking, it vehemently disregards the important point of contention, which the post-left theory is well known-of—the revolutionary self-theory.
Revolutionary self-theory like the Lefebvrean moment is a perishable instant, ephemeral and unique. But in the course of time, these instants transforms into something else along the varying terrain of Discourse, making it a formidable instant. Although, it may be repeatable in a certain degree, yet, “the constructed situation (i.e. coup de’tat) is not in itself repeatable as a moment,” explains Lefebvre. The anarchist moment of communes, autonomous assemblies and workers councils are considered to be perishable instants, meanwhile governments and State are constructed situations.
This is where EarthFirst! (Davao group) has once again failed to understand KSAI, by blatantly reducing anarchist moments also known as “orgasms of history” to be mere rigid models and answers, only to support imposed binary thought structure accusations.
PROBLEMATISING IDEOLOGY
Ideology is a coherent system of ideas in a broad sense of a term, but since ideology most often work operatively in binary structures, it is not surprising to know that it normalizes behaviour patterns and imperiously reproduces itself. This is where the individual consciousness has become a meaningless gunk, reducing the individual capacity to think by altering it into the realms of mass produced consciousness. Hegemony is the best way to describe such condition, according to Antonio Gramsci.
In the Philippines, dominant ideology is obviously seen from institutions that imperatively imposes itself in people’s thinking, namely through the Church, government agencies, media, work, education, military and police. The aim is to reproduce a kind of belief system that would ensure prolonged existence of a certain class from power.
Power is a crucial ingredient for Ideology; it is a key tool to enable ideology to influence others, therefore the centralization of power (State) is necessary for the domineering class. In this sense, constructed situation emerge to herd the masses if State crisis breaks out, either through propaganda (i.e. Left and Right conspiracy), coup d’eta, election, etc.
In summary, Ideology is not obviously a perishable instant, the same, as the State cannot be equated to a moment. The Left has already proved this by viewing the State on a continuum of ambivalence. “Most are clear that the role of the State is to further the goals of whatever class happens to rule at any given period,” says Lawrence Jarach (Leftism 101)
ROBOT DECONSTRUCTION
Now, how do moments blasphemously tear down a constructed situation being reproduced by the State? How do we disassemble a gigantic robot into pieces and utilise the parts that will fit into our daily lives? How then do we go wild? These questions seek no particular answer, but rather it invites individuals and groups to create their own moment that will eventually spread like an epidemic to heal our lost consciousness and steal back our lives.
If KSAI has blurted out Workers Council, Autonomous Assemblies and Communes, the intention is not to provide models the same as the Philippine Left is trying to persuade their Ideology to us, but rather it cherishes moments of the past where people and individuals has acted upon themselves. It’s a moment that can resurge back and inspire us to create our own situations by breaking-away from the spectacle.
Because moments are perishable instants, seize your desires! And let Ideologies be a passing moment.
